PRIDE FESTIVAL IN THE 1000 ISLANDS

Let your true colours shine during Summer Solstice: Pride in the 1,000 Islands!

Set for June 20 to 22, 2014, the 1,000 Islands pride event merges celebrating diversity with carefree amusement.

“The flavour of the weekend is fun, meant to showcase the islands, water, theatre, merchants, and diversity in a welcoming community,” said Kathrine Christensen, executive director of the 1,000 Islands Accommodation Partners, noting this is the third year for the festival. “We try to have the entire community gather to celebrate summer solstice while having our visitors experience that zest for life you can only find in the 1,000 Islands.”

The weekend is making good use of the stunning 1,000 Islands this year, allowing visitors to spend maximum amounts of time cruising the waters of the St. Lawrence River off the shores of Gananoque. Three major events are being staged on the water this year: the Friday night Rocky Horror Picture Show cruise, the Pride Parade Flotilla and the evening adult-only drag cruise.

The unique venue makes for an unforgettable weekend – showcasing what the 1,000 Islands has to offer while also providing a memorable celebration.

Being a part of the flotilla gives visitors the ability to truthfully say they were in Canada’s only pride parade on water! Decorated boats of all sizes and horsepower cruise the St. Lawrence River through the Admiralty Islands led by a Gananoque Boat Line vessel with dignitaries and visitors on board.

Enthusiasm will be at an all-time high in between the cruises, with the Thousand Islands Playhouse opening a new show that weekend, as well as a Pride Gala Party hosted by the Gananoque Inn on the Saturday night. Rainbow Family Fun Day will grace Town Park on the Sunday, with family-friendly activities hosted by PFLAG ongoing throughout the early afternoon.

The Thousand Islands Playhouse will also be presenting a staged reading on June 22 at 2:30 p.m. from the Canadian play, Bed and Breakfast. Playwright Mark Crawford draws the audience into this heartfelt comedy about being out in a small town, skeletons in the closet, and finding a place to call home. The Playhouse enticed two of Canada’s preeminent Queer artists, Andrew Kushnir and Paul Dunn, to appear in the play.

“We have a diverse, kaleidoscope of visitors who come to enjoy our area,” said Christensen. “Showcasing our area, showcasing what we have, and being authentic to what we have to offer the LGBT community as a year-round destination is integral to the festival,” Christensen said.

Encourage friends and family, couples and singles, to show their pride and attend the Summer Solstice: Pride in the 1,000 Islands event. It’s the perfect kick-off to a summer full of memories!
